ABOUT JOE
Joe is originally from London, England and was qualified into the Chartered society of Physiotherapists (UK) in 2006. He has practiced from coast to coast in Canada applying two decades of experience in musculoskeletal, orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation. During his time working with University varsity sports in the Atlantic provinces he began to pursue further academic study and expertise in biomechanical testing for diverse clinical applications. This lead to being awarded an MSc from the University of Dundee School of Medicine in 2021. Joe is passionate in furthering the Physiotherapy profession by advocating technological innovation that enhances patient care and treatment outcomes.
Why did you become a Physiotherapist?
I played high-level soccer in the UK and sustained an ankle injury that prevented me from participating in a national team training opportunity. The rehabilitation process exposed me to the role physiotherapy plays in restoring movement and optimizing return to performance. It also highlighted the broad scope of the profession, combining elements of medicine, coaching, and psychology to support recovery and progression. This experience led me to pursue physiotherapy, with a focus on accurate assessment and structured, performance-based rehabilitation.
Do you have an area of special interest?
I have a special interest in motion analysis and biomechanical assessment. This involves evaluating how people move to identify mechanical factors that may contribute to injury risk or limit performance. I incorporate this into all aspects of my clinical care such as with running injuries and orthopaedic lower limb issues. One other area I am especially invested in is guiding grappling and combat sports practitioners back to training.
How does movement impact your life?
For me, movement equals fun. I have been fortunate to compete and enjoy all kinds of sports such as Rugby, Cricket, Golf and even some lesser known sports like Hurling. Over the last decade I became more involved in Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which is where you will likely find me when I’m not working.
What does a great physiotherapy experience look like to you?
I have personally felt more at ease when I receive medical advice or treatment when the environment is not so formally rigid and where treatment starts to feel collaborative and honest rather than just prescribed. So, I try to provide the same for my patients so we are both working towards the same goals.
