Acupuncture is an evidence-based physiotherapy technique that supports pain relief, recovery, and overall well-being through precise needle stimulation at specific points in the body.

When used within physiotherapy treatment, acupuncture can help relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, and support your body’s natural ability to move and heal.

What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe, evidence-based physiotherapy technique that involves inserting fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body.
Traditionally, these points are described along meridians that represent connections between body systems. From a modern medical perspective, these same points align with areas rich in nerves, muscle tissue, and connective tissue.
Stimulating these points can influence how the nervous system processes pain, improve circulation, and activate natural healing responses.
At Avenue Physio, acupuncture is used to reduce pain, relax overactive muscles, and promote recovery. It is most effective when combined with manual therapy, exercise, and education as part of a complete physiotherapy plan.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture works through both local and systemic effects to support pain relief and recovery.
Modern research shows acupuncture influences:
  • The nervous system
  • Circulation and tissue oxygenation
  • Muscle tension and trigger point activity
  • Natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body

Skilled needle placement can:

  • Decrease muscle irritation and guarding
  • Stimulate endorphin release for pain control
  • Improve blood flow to injured tissues
  • Regulate how the nervous system responds to pain and stress
Together, these effects help calm sensitive tissues, reduce discomfort, and support healing and movement recovery.
Research consistently shows acupuncture is most effective when combined with exercise, education, and manual therapy for lasting results.

Questions

Acupuncture

Here are some of the common questions our Calgary patients ask about how Acupuncture works, what to expect, and how it can help you move and feel better.

Your physiotherapist begins with an assessment to determine if acupuncture is appropriate for your condition. Fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points and remain in place for 15 to 30 minutes while you rest comfortably. You may feel a mild ache, warmth, or heaviness at the site. This is a normal response that settles quickly.

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, increases blood flow, and triggers the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and melatonin.

Both use fine sterile needles but differ in approach.

Dry needling targets tight or overactive muscles based on Western medical principles.

Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and stimulates points to influence pain and system balance.

Your physiotherapist will help determine which approach best fits your condition.

When acupuncture is performed by a physiotherapist, it is billed under physiotherapy services, not as a separate acupuncture benefit. If your extended health plan covers physiotherapy, we can direct bill your treatment.

Some people notice improvement after one session, while others require multiple treatments depending on the duration and severity of symptoms. Your physiotherapist will guide this based on your progress.

Yes. Most extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy when provided by a Registered Physiotherapist.

We direct bill to all major national insurers and to most group and specialty benefit providers, including Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life Financial, Manulife, Green Shield Canada, and Desjardins Insurance.

Direct billing means we submit your claim for you at the time of your visit. You’re only responsible for any amount not covered by your plan.
