Research supports shockwave therapy as a proven tool for tendon and soft-tissue recovery. Clinical studies show 70 to 80 percent improvement rates for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and calcific shoulder pain, especially when combined with graded loading and movement retraining.
If a chronic tendon injury or ongoing pain is limiting your activity, shockwave therapy may be an important part of your recovery.
Our physiotherapists are trained in Storz Radial Shockwave technology, advanced manual therapy, and evidence-based tendon rehabilitation techniques to ensure your treatment is safe, precise, and effective.
Real experiences from patients who have found relief, improved movement, and lasting confidence through hands-on physiotherapy at Avenue Physio.

Questions
Shockwave Therapy
Here are some of the common questions our Calgary patients ask about how Shockwave Therapy works, what to expect, and how it can help you move and feel better.
During your session, your physiotherapist will use a handheld applicator to deliver acoustic pressure waves to the affected area for approximately 3 to 5 minutes per region. You may feel a deep ache or mild discomfort as the waves stimulate healing. This is a normal response, and intensity is always adjusted for comfort.
It is normal to feel mild soreness or tenderness for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. This temporary irritation is part of the healing process. Avoid icing or anti-inflammatory medication afterward, as this can slow recovery. Your physiotherapist will guide you through appropriate movement and rehab exercises.
Most patients benefit from 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced one week apart. The number of treatments depends on your specific condition, healing response, and activity goals.
Shockwave therapy works best when combined with an active rehabilitation plan. While the acoustic waves help reduce pain and stimulate healing, progressive tendon loading and exercise rebuild strength and restore lasting function. Research shows combining these approaches leads to better outcomes.
Shockwave therapy is particularly effective for chronic tendon or soft-tissue conditions that have not improved with other physiotherapy treatments. It is commonly used for plantar fasciitis, Achilles and patellar tendinopathy, tennis or golfer’s elbow, calcific shoulder pain, and shin splints.
