What Is Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves to target injured soft tissues and tendons. These waves stimulate the body’s natural healing response by improving blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and promoting tissue regeneration.
At Avenue Physio, we use the Storz Radial Shockwave System, one of the most researched and widely used technologies worldwide. Shockwave is particularly effective for chronic tendon and overuse injuries that have not responded to traditional care.
Shockwave therapy is never used in isolation. It is part of an integrated, evidence-based physiotherapy plan that includes exercise, education, and manual therapy to help you move better and recover faster.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave therapy works through both mechanical and biological effects that accelerate healing and reduce pain.
Skilled application can:
  • Stimulate new blood vessel growth and increase local circulation
  • Boost collagen production to strengthen tendons and connective tissue
  • Break down painful calcium deposits
  • Reduce pain by calming nerve sensitivity and lowering inflammatory chemicals
  • Release tight muscles and restore healthy movement patterns

Research supports shockwave therapy as a proven tool for tendon and soft-tissue recovery. Clinical studies show 70 to 80 percent improvement rates for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and calcific shoulder pain, especially when combined with graded loading and movement retraining.

The result is reduced pain, improved function, and faster return to daily activity, sport, and performance.

What Shockwave Therapy Helps With

Shockwave therapy is effective for a wide range of chronic or slow-healing conditions, including:
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Calcific rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
  • Gluteal or hamstring tendinopathy
These conditions often involve poor blood flow or long-standing tissue sensitivity. Shockwave therapy helps restart the healing process by stimulating tissue regeneration and reducing pain sensitivity.

Questions

Shockwave Therapy

Here are some of the common questions our Calgary patients ask about how Shockwave Therapy works, what to expect, and how it can help you move and feel better.

During your session, your physiotherapist will use a handheld applicator to deliver acoustic pressure waves to the affected area for approximately 3 to 5 minutes per region. You may feel a deep ache or mild discomfort as the waves stimulate healing. This is a normal response, and intensity is always adjusted for comfort.

It is normal to feel mild soreness or tenderness for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. This temporary irritation is part of the healing process. Avoid icing or anti-inflammatory medication afterward, as this can slow recovery. Your physiotherapist will guide you through appropriate movement and rehab exercises.

Most patients benefit from 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced one week apart. The number of treatments depends on your specific condition, healing response, and activity goals.

Shockwave therapy works best when combined with an active rehabilitation plan. While the acoustic waves help reduce pain and stimulate healing, progressive tendon loading and exercise rebuild strength and restore lasting function. Research shows combining these approaches leads to better outcomes.

Shockwave therapy is particularly effective for chronic tendon or soft-tissue conditions that have not improved with other physiotherapy treatments. It is commonly used for plantar fasciitis, Achilles and patellar tendinopathy, tennis or golfer’s elbow, calcific shoulder pain, and shin splints.
