Understanding TMJ (Jaw) Pain

The temporomandibular joint, often called the TMJ, connects your jaw to your skull. It works closely with your neck, upper back, and facial muscles. When this system becomes irritated, overworked, or poorly coordinated, symptoms can develop.

Common TMJ related symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Clicking, popping, or locking
  • Headaches or facial pain
  • Pain with chewing or talking
  • Ear fullness or ringing
  • Neck and upper back tension
TMJ disorders are rarely caused by just one factor. Muscle tension, posture, stress, clenching or grinding, neck dysfunction, and previous dental or facial trauma can all play a role.

How Physiotherapy Helps TMJ (Jaw) Disorders

Physiotherapy addresses TMJ issues by improving joint mobility, muscle balance, posture, and movement coordination. Care is always individualized based on your symptoms and daily demands.
Your physiotherapist may help you:
  • Reduce jaw and facial muscle tension
  • Improve jaw opening and closing mechanics
  • Restore neck and upper back mobility
  • Address clenching or grinding habits
  • Improve posture and breathing patterns
  • Build confidence with daily activities such as eating and speaking
Treatment may include hands on therapy for the jaw, neck, and face, targeted exercises, neuromuscular retraining, and education to help prevent flare ups.

How Long Does It Take to Improve

Many people notice improvements in jaw pain, stiffness, and headaches within the first few weeks of consistent physiotherapy care.

More lasting improvements in movement control, muscle balance, and symptom stability typically develop over several months depending on the complexity of your condition and contributing factors.

Your timeline will always depend on your starting point, your habits, and how consistently your jaw and neck are exposed to the right type of movement.
