Fast Facts About Elbow Pain

  • Elbow pain is often related to tendon sensitivity, but can also follow a strain or minor injury
  • Pain does not always mean tearing or permanent damage
  • Imaging findings often do not explain symptoms or pain levels
  • Tendons and soft tissues adapt slowly and respond best to progressive loading
  • Most elbow pain improves with physiotherapy and does not require injections or surgery

Understanding Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can develop in different ways. For some people, symptoms begin after a specific event such as a sudden lift, strain, or awkward movement. For others, pain develops gradually over time with repeated use of the hands and arms for work, sport, or daily tasks.

Tendons around the elbow are designed to tolerate load. When the demands placed on them exceed what they are currently able to handle, whether suddenly or over time, they can become sensitive and painful. This does not automatically mean the tendon is torn or permanently damaged. It often means the tissue needs the right balance of loading, recovery, and support to adapt.

Elbow symptoms can also be influenced by how the shoulder, wrist, and neck are functioning. That is why our physiotherapy assessment always looks beyond the elbow itself to identify contributing factors and guide effective treatment.

Elbow Conditions We Commonly Treat

A thorough physiotherapy assessment helps identify the primary contributors to your elbow pain so treatment is precise and effective.

Common elbow related conditions we treat include:
  • Tennis elbow, lateral epicondylitis, or tendinopathy
  • Golfer’s elbow, medial epicondylitis or tendinopathy
  • Ligament sprain or mild instability of the elbow
  • Pain with gripping, lifting, or repetitive hand use
  • Elbow stiffness following overuse or minor injury
  • Recurrent or persistent elbow pain

Why Elbow Pain Happens

Elbow pain is rarely caused by one single factor. It often develops when the load placed on the tendon exceeds what it is currently able to tolerate.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Sudden increases in gripping or lifting demands
  • Repetitive arm or hand use without adequate recovery
  • Reduced strength or endurance of the forearm muscles
  • Changes in activity level or workload
  • Compensation from the shoulder or wrist
  • Nervous system sensitivity

Overall health and recovery also influence how tendons respond to load. Factors such as stress, poor sleep, hormonal changes, including menopause, smoking, and certain health conditions like diabetes, can increase sensitivity without causing permanent damage.

Understanding which of these factors matter most for you allows physiotherapy to focus on improving load tolerance, restoring strength, and supporting long-term recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions - Elbow Pain

In most cases, no. Elbow pain can usually be assessed and treated effectively without imaging. Your physiotherapist will recommend imaging only if it is clinically necessary.
Elbow pain, especially tendon related pain, often improves gradually. Many people notice meaningful improvement within six to twelve weeks with consistent rehabilitation, but full recovery can take longer. Elbow tendons adapt slowly, and steady, progressive loading over time is key to lasting improvement.
Complete rest is rarely helpful. Gentle controlled use of the arm usually supports recovery. Movements that cause sharp or worsening pain should be modified. Your physiotherapist will guide you on how much load is appropriate.

Yes. Most cases of tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow improve with physiotherapy. Progressive strengthening, load management, and education are the most effective treatments.

Corticosteroid injections are not recommended for elbow tendon pain. Research consistently shows poorer long term outcomes and higher recurrence rates compared to exercise based rehabilitation.
