GLAD BACK PROGRAM CALGARY DOWNTOWN

GLA:D Back Pain Program

Back pain is very common. Up to 80% of people will experience this type of pain in their life.

Back pain can lead to a significant loss of function resulting in a decreased ability to complete activities of daily living, exercise and participate in social activities. This can be very scary and lead to anxiety and a depressed mood in many people. This is why back pain is the leading cause of disability,

And this is why Avenue Physio is very excited to be offering the GLA:D BACK® program.

We are always learning and researching to find the best evidence based treatment to support our community. The GLA:D Back program is just that. A program that was developed in Denmark for persistent and/or recurrent back pain.

Avenue Physio is pleased to be offering the GLA:D BACK® program.

WHAT IS THE GLA:D PROGRAM?

Commonly Asked Questions
WHAT DOES GLA:D STAND FOR?

GLA:D® is an exercise program, originally developed in Denmark, for those with hip or knee osteoarthritis. The Danish program was called “Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark” and abbreviated GLA:D®.

WHAT MAKES THE GLA:D PROGRAM SPECIAL?

The GLAD program was launched in Denmark in 2013 with the aim to implement guidelines to facilitate the highest quality of care based on the most up-to-date research. There have been over 50,000 people participating in the program since its inception. Several measurements for each participant have been taken both before and after the program. These results have shown a reduction in symptoms of 32%. Other outcomes include:

  • reduction in pain intensity
  • reduced use of pain medications
  • increased levels of physical activity
  • delayed surgery or prevention of surgery
  • fewer individuals on sick leave
IS THE GLA:D PROGRAM COVERED BY EXTENDED BENEFITS?

Yes! Because all sessions are led by a physiotherapist they can be submitted to your extended benefits provider for reimbursement as part of your physiotherapy coverage.

Check with your extended benefits provider to see if you have coverage for physiotherapy. Many plans cover physiotherapy however amounts vary so check with your provider to confirm coverage. We are able to direct bills and electronically submit your claim to most insurance companies for your convenience. Please have all your insurance information with you at your appointment.

HAS GLA:D® BEEN TESTED?

Yes, the results of the pilot study that took place in 2017 are published in the journal BioMed Central (BMC) Pilot & Feasibility Studies. The ongoing results are documented and made publicly available in newsletters, annual reports and scientific articles.
