Going down stairs places higher load on the knee than level walking.
The quadriceps muscles work eccentrically to control the knee as the body lowers. If the knee or surrounding muscles are not currently tolerating this load well, pain can develop.
This does not automatically mean the knee is damaged. Often the knee simply needs improved strength and load tolerance.
